Breastfeeding In Public

Many women feel that there is an unwritten law against breastfeeding in public. Other women believe that breastfeeding in public falls under the umbrella of public exposure and assume that it already is illegal to engage in breastfeeding in public. If that were the case, there’d be a whole lot of babies out there without mothers! The truth of the matter is that there is absolutely nothing wrong with breast feeding in public, and those that feel that there must be some sort of a law against it somewhere should consult a lawyer in order to ask about their rights. Of course, it is best to be discreet with public breast feeding, but staying home for all of the months when your child is breast fed is simply unnecessary.

Taboos

Public breastfeeding has been a bit of a taboo for many years. Nowadays, public breastfeeding photos are put online to ridicule mothers who breastfeed their children in public. Saturday Night Live (as well as the British version) have shown skits made by people against breast feeding in public. These skits take the taboo of breastfeeding your toddler in public to a whole new level, showing grown men wanting to be breast fed by their mothers. Taking the public breastfeeding taboo to this extreme is simply a question of poor taste. As far as the public breastfeeding pictures posted online are concerned, many women find it helpful to be aware of the population’s anti public breastfeeding stance; however, there is also something to be said for tolerance.

Tolerance

Women who never engage in breast feeding their child in public are certainly not out of the house very much. For women who are scared that a law against breastfeeding in public could get passed, rest assured that the government is well aware that a mother and child have just as much right to do their business outside as anyone else. There are many more people for a law for breast feeding in public than there are people against it, so the odds of it becoming truly illegal are pretty small, especially in these modern times. Legalizing breast feeding in public simply means letting women know that they have a right to do what they have to do on the street. Babies eat so often that assuming a mother would never feed her child while outside the house is simply unreasonable and will not be taken seriously in today’s day and age.
